Krook3D Vision

It’s been raining quite a lot lately and I haven’t gotten a decent session in the past couple of weeks. There is not much going on, so I don’t have anything to post related to the state of skateboarding in the Kansai area. I am going to go out on a limb and assume that there haven’t been any drastic changes.

Yesterday was the official opening of the Minami-mori skate park in Kobe. There were booths and demos and all kinds of fun to be had… Supposedly. I didn’t go. I did however head over to the skate park around 6 PM after all that bullshit ended to check it out and hopefully skate. I soon found out skating was out of the question. In spite of its location under a highway, there are openings right above every ramp and block in the park, rendering the whole place completely unskate-able. If you are really fiending for a skate fix you can skate some dry flat areas. They areas that were previously fenced off have finally been opened. Nothing has been added. It’s just a big open areas with the same ledges that have been done for months and it is still closed off from the rest of the park with out any additional lighting. Considering that skating the ramps with all the BMXers is like entering the Thunderdome, I will probably be spending most of my time at the park out on the ledges away from the kooks.

Anyway, I basically spent yesterday afternoon and evening walking around with my board trying not to get it wet. It wasn’t a completely wasted trip though. I did make a stop at Shelter to say hi to Irishio and more importantly pick up Krook3D. Now I have to say that this recent 3D fad that has swept over the world annoys the ever living shit out of me. It’s a gimmick. Hollywood hasn’t had a decent idea in decades and the movie theaters are always looking for a way to screw you out of another couple of bucks. Then you’ve got 3D television and 3D video cameras coming out, and the bullshit starts piling up so fast you need a snorkel to breath. So when I first heard about a 3D skate video coming out I immediately dismissed it. The thought of watching the Gonz put on his eccentric arteest show in 3D was too much to bear.

At some point in the last month or so I completely flip-flopped. Had I succumbed to the hype? Did my usual bitterness break just long enough for the Gonz’ man-child antics to win me over? Did I get hit in the head? Who knows? All I know is when the video dropped I wanted it. That’s saying a lot actually because the last video I bought came out on VHS.

Krook3D comes with two pairs of 3D glasses and little photo book. The photo book is a nice touch but it makes the DVD case bulky and awkward. All the same it’s really not necessary. The video itself is pretty good. It’s 30 minutes long, has an additional 30 minute 2D edit option. The video just get’s right to the point. There’s no slow-mo long shots, no 15 minute emotional intro, no individual parts, nor any hammer after hammer skating. Everyone skates together, with a number of guest skaters thrown in the mix, and the parts are broken up geographically (e.g. NYC, SF, etc.). Admittedly, the 3D is kind of cool actually. Not just watching a skate video in 3D but the fact that when producing it, they clearly picked locations and filmed differently to make it look good in 3D, so the video has different feel altogether.

That said, I am glad it has a good old fashioned 2D edit option. 3D is still just a gimmick. It also kind of hurts your eyes and after 30 minutes of squinting through those glasses at the screen it fucks with your perception for 10 minutes or so after you’ve finished. The video will likely be considered mediocre by most、Quartersnacks simply said it sucks, but I like it. It’s reminiscent of going out cruising from spot to spot on a nice day with your friends. As I wrote earlier everyone skates together so there are not any individual showcases of talent, however Bobby Worrest certainly stands out the most in my opinion. As to be expected, the Gonz is fun to watch skate and I love his/the final trick of the video.

Lastly, if the main feature left you unsatisfied the extras menu has some traditional skate footage with the ams ripping shit up, Manderson, and some footage of the late Van Westall. All in all, it is a good video. The soundtrack is good. The skating and the flow of the video is right up my alley, so I enjoyed it. However if you’re already over Stay Gold and are looking for the next awe inspiring, ego pumping, tear jerking, skate-bonanza, don’t look for it here.

Wonder if they are gonna add anything more to the park. Maybe we should just bring down a manual pad, box and a rail? That’s basically all I can skate anyway!

I watched the Krook3D trailer online. As you said it’s kinda cool but messes with your eyes. They are just taking the piss out of the recent fad and Quartersnacks are taking it too seriously. They are even using retro anaglyph red and cyan glasses instead of using polarised glasses.

Some bloke cobbled together a 3-D camera and is friends with Bobby Worrest and Mike Anderson, he then approached them with the idea of filming in 3-D and being Krooked they went for it. Fair enough.

Also, don’t forget Tim you like skating flat banks too ; )

@Tim- Yes. I think we should just bring our own shit in. I doubt the skint fellows at Kobe city hall are giving us any more. I also wondered if this is some kind of commentary on the recent 3D bullshit (if so it’s ver y subtle!) or if it fun just for fun or a cash in or what. Anyway it is fun.

    @Joe- …

    Haha.

I still think they are taking the piss and just having fun. It’s not like they are thinking “we are pioneers! soon all skate videos are going to be in 3D!”

And yes, I do like flat banks. In fact, forget the other shit. Just get me a flat bank that is away from the BMX kill zone.
