Skate Map

There is not much going on at the moment to write about, so I thought I might as well throw this one in the mix. That is unless you’d like to read about me skating flatground in the local park after work. Fascinating as it may be, I have my doubts.

This map is a little project I’ve been working on since spring. Japan is not very easy to explore even with (or should I say ‘especially with’?) a car. Busy narrow streets, mountains, heaps of people, and not a free parking spot to be found. Exploring by train puts a dent in one’s pocket and limits accessable areas. Traveling by board, which is ultimately the most effective method,  can be tiring and fruitless if you end up lost in the urban sprawl. As a result people tend to stick to the more well known and accessable spots. This is part of the reason why I started this map. The other part is because I tire of the old “Dude, I found the sickest spot” routine, in which the usually response is an indifferent “Hm, sounds cool”. Also it’s a little disappointing when you roll up on a new spot only to find out it’s a bust during the day, or that it needs wax, etc.

On this map street spots are marked with red push pins, public skate parks with green, private parks with the yen symbol, and skate shops with a shopping bag. All entries have a basic description of it’s location and the terrain. I try to include at least one photo of every spot but not all of them do at this point in time (use street view!).

So far I’ve only covered spots in the Kansai area and a handful in Nagoya. I hope that people will contribute and will be able to someday showcase spots from all around the country. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done but I think I’ve got pretty decent base up right now, so check it out and pitch in!

Status began in 2010 as a simple way to share skate photos taken in Kansai, Japan. We now have three contributors producing bilingual content about skateboarding in Japan and elsewhere.
